 -   FLOWER VASE  -

For making a beautiful flower vase, at least 5 tools are rquired:

Blowpipes: a blowpipe is a hollow tube usually 48” to 52” long with a tapered end. It is made of mild steel about 5/8” OD with a 1/8” wall. The end is about7/8” OD, tapering back about 2” to the tube. The blowpipe comes in all sizes, depending on the height of the worker and his strength.

Pun ties: a punty is a solid rod for gathering glass. It is used after the blowing is finished: the punty is attached to the base of the piece so that neck or opening where the piece is broken off the blowpipe, can be finished by reheating and shaping.

Yokes: The yoke is a Y-shaped support for the blowpipe. In Sweden you can find Yoke with two steel balls in the corners of a cast U-shape piece. The balls are set in a hole slightly larger than they are so that they can roll freely on small ball bearings underneath. This yoke has some advantages, but in the Eisch factory it was discarded foe a simple bent rod welded onto an upright.

Benches: A simple bench, extended to the right for right-handed people (this is one of those flagrant examples of prejudice pointed out by the national Association for the Advancement of left-handed People), has two arms extended forward to support a blowpipe as it is rolled back and forth to work the glass form. A shield is customarily dropped from the right side to protect the worker’s while making flower vase from the radiant heat. The bench extension holds the jacks, shears, and other small tools. Water buckets with the wood tools are customarily just behind this bench extension but within reach of the outstretched hand of the seated worker.

Furnaces: and the final and most important tool for making flower vase is furnace,

They are two types: pots and tanks. In a pot furnace the glass is in a refractory container or clay pot; in the tank, the bottom of the furnace itself holds the glass.

Making a furnace is not difficult, since all bricks are standard sizes, the basic unit being 9”x4 ½” x 2 ½”, no mortar is required, because the glass flows out the cracks and seal the furnace together as it comes into the cooler parts of the wall.

Making simple flower vase is possible in this kind of furnaces.
