Before
electricity became
an energy source
available to almost
everyone, fire and
candle were the
only sources of
artificial light.
Now, although no
longer a necessity,
candles are still
found in most homes,
not merely for their
decoration value,
but because there
is something very
special about candlelight.
Lighting a few candles
immediately changes
the ambience of
a room, their warm
flickering flames
entrancing all who
enter. From the
earliest times dipping
rushes and cord
in tallow made tapers,
candles, and lamps.
Tallow
is an animal fat
that produces acrid
clouds of black
smoke and an offensive
smell when burned.
Better quality candles
made of beeswax
were also made,
but they were very
expensive and only
affordable by the
church and the aristocracy.
It was not until
the early 19th century
that industrialization
and oil refining
techniques led to
the development
of cheaper, longer
burning, odor-free
candles. Stearin
(a chemical compound
originally produced
for the soap industry)
and paraffin wax
(a by-product of
hydrocarbon oil
refining) eventually
changed the techniques
of candle making
and the lives of
everyone.
Modern
candles burn with
a steady flame and
usually do not drip
unless there is
a draft. If you
happen to get spills
of wax on clothing,
furniture, or fabrics,
allow the wax to
cool and harden
before you attempt
to remove it. Scrape
off as much of the
hard wax as possible
with knife, and
then iron the affected
area through a sheet
of absorbent paper.
Finally, remember
that your magical
candle flame is
also a potential
fire hazard.
Candle
making is very similar
to cooking. With
a few basic materials,
it is possible to
make a wide range
of different creations
and, like cooking,
it is what you do
with your materials
and how you heat
them that produces
the end result in
candle making. To
make a candle you
need wax and wick.
Both are available
from crafts shop
and specialty stores.
It is also possible
to buy candle-making
kits that contain
all the material
you need to make
a few simple candles.
A kit can be good
introduction to
candle making. The
most important material
in candle making
is the wax. For
the projects in
this book, no specific
quantities of wax
are given, because
the amount of each
candle will vary
according to the
size of the candle
you want to make.
To determine the
amount you need
for a specific mold,
fill the mold with
water, and then
pour the water into
a measuring cup
to see how much
the mold held. Foe
every 16oz. of water
you will need1 ¼
lbs. of cold wax.
If you melt too
much wax, do not
worry. You can reuse
any extra for your
next project.
