Zimax, as a wholesale glass candle holder supplier wants to share
part of history of Candles and Candle making methods with you. The exact history
of the candle is unknown, for its origins are almost as ancient as the history of
man. The earliest ancestor of the true candle, the type known today, was the
torch. Primitive torches, which are related to the open fire, might be of the
simplest and most naturalistic type. They could be made from such materials as
a pine knot, a dried tree branch, wood splinters bound as bundles, the body of
small fish or bird, or any other organic material with sufficient flammable
content. For purposes of terminology, such lighting devices intended for
outdoor use might be called torches; if intended for indoor use, they should be
called elementary candles.
One of the most familiar types of elementary candle is the
pine-splinter torch. This is made from a splinter or silver of resinous wood,
which is the ignited. Closely related is the rush light, for which the basic
flammable ingredient is the pith of a marsh rush that has been dipped in grease
or fat. The coated rush is fastened into a scissors- like holder, generally of
iron, and ignited.
The immediate ancestor of the true candle is the taper a
cord that has been thinly coated with fat or wax. When a group of cords that
have been treated in this manner are tied together, they are referred to as
“flambeau”
While true candles certainly might have been developed
earlier, there is documentary evidence to show their existence by the eleventh
century. From this date is preserved a part of the Exultet Roll that is now in
the Vatican Library. An illumination from this source shows a tall Paschal
candle being lighted from a taper. Several other illuminations from the same
roll, which date from the twelfth century, show both large paschal candles and
small candles in use. Despite the fact that candles may have existed in Roman
times, the fact remains that they did not come into general use until the
fourteenth century. Medieval candles were either carried in the hand or held on
pricket, or spiked, stand made of iron, brass, or bronze. A thin metal spike
was inserted in the bottom of the candle, and it was thus held in place.
The true candle is formed from a cord or wick surrounded by
a thick layer of tallow or wax that serves as fuel. It is, of course, the flame
that is the most important part of a burning candle. The candle flame is
actually a body of gas in different stages of combustion. The part nearest the
wick is a core of gas. An area where the carbon in the fuel causes the flame to
radiate the most heat and light surrounds this.
The third part of the flame is around and above this; here
the carbon is being competently oxidized, and vanishes.
